Apple's next-generation chip technology being tested ahead of launch

Apple contract chipmaker TSMC will begin testing production of its 2nm chips next week ahead of bringing the chip technology to Apple Silicon in 2025, ET News reported.

Apple Silicon is expected to move to 2nm next year.

Apple's 2nm chip technology production test

According to the ET News Production testing of Apple's 2nm chip technology was conducted at TSMC's Baoshan plant in northern Taiwan. The equipment needed to produce the chips was brought to the plant in the second quarter of 2024.

The iPhone 15 Pro is powered by the A17 Pro chip, which is manufactured by TSMC using a 3nm process. This process allows for more transistors to be packed into a smaller space, improving efficiency and performance.

The Apple M4 chip in the iPad Pro is an improvement on 3nm chip technology. The shift to 2nm is expected to deliver a 10 to 15 percent performance boost, while at the same time consuming up to 30 percent less power than the 3nm process.

Mass production from 2025

Chipmaker TSMC plans to start mass production of 2nm chips next year. The company appears to have accelerated the process to ensure stable yields ahead of mass production.

So far, TSMC is the only manufacturer that can produce 2nm and 3nm chips that meet Apple's requirements in terms of quantity and quality.

Apple has reserved the production capacity available for its 3nm chips with its largest contract manufacturer. The iPhone 17 series will be released in 2025 and will be the first series to run on 2nm chips.
