Apple has once again positioned itself as a leader in the world of semiconductor technology. According to reports, the company has acquired initial capacity for TSMC's 2nm manufacturing technology. This development comes after Apple's success in integrating 3nm chips into recent iPhone and Mac models. The move to 2nm chips is expected to increase the performance and efficiency of Apple devices. With increased transistor density and improved speeds while using less power, future generations of Apple devices, starting with the iPhone 17 Pro, could see significant performance improvements.
2nm and TSMC's role in Apple's chip strategy
TSMC, as a long-standing partner of Apple, plays a central role in implementing these technology ambitions. The processor manufacturer is already preparing for mass production using the 2nm process, and the new factories are scheduled to start production in the second half of 2025.
The “2nm” designation does not refer to the actual size of the device, but is a marketing term for a manufacturing technology with higher transistor density and improved performance. The latest jump from 5nm to 3nm has already brought significant improvements in the performance of Apple devices.
Introducing new manufacturing methods, such as switching from FinFET to all-gate transistors (GAAFET) in 2nm chips, requires significant investments and the construction of new production facilities. Apple appears ready to confront these challenges and secure a leadership position in advanced semiconductor technology.
Looking to the future: 1.4nm chips are already being planned
Apple is reportedly already planning the next step in miniaturization and is negotiating to move to 1.4nm manufacturing. This continued innovation underscores Apple's commitment to staying at the forefront of technology development.
