Windows Update

If you’re using Windows 10 or Windows 11 with a Windows 7/8/8.1 product key,It appears that after updating the motherboard BIOS, license authentication may be lost and re-authentication may not be possible. This was reported by foreign media Neowin.

Windows problem

In October 2023, Microsoft blocked new license activation for Windows 10 and Windows 11 using Windows 7/8/8.1 product keys. This block appears to be causing a problem with license authentication.

According to reports, if you change computer parts like motherboard or update BIOS in an environment with Windows 7/8/8.1 product key,It is said that there are cases where the license certificate is lost and cannot be recertified. As a result, it becomes necessary to purchase a new license.

One user who encountered this issue said:

I contacted customer support because license activation was not successful. My Windows 10 license was upgraded from Windows 7, and I was told that my Windows 10 license could not continue after the hardware change because Windows 7 product keys were no longer supported. However, you also acknowledge that because changing hardware does not constitute a violation of the Windows license, there is no reason to revoke or change the license.

In this regard, Bill Babonas, chief product manager at Microsoft, said:

We are aware of these customer reports and are currently investigating them. If you are experiencing technical issues, please contact customer support.

-Microsoft, Bill Babonas

When we investigated, we found several reports that license authentication was lost even in Japan after a BIOS update and re-authentication was no longer possible. On the other hand, there are also reports of no issues even after a BIOS update, and whether license authentication is lost or not seems to depend on the environment.

However, until this issue is resolved, those using Windows 7 or 8.1 product keys may want to refrain from making major hardware changes such as updating the BIOS or replacing the motherboard.
