Polestar recently participated in the first Pole Star Day In Los Angeles, there are ideas and innovations that can provide insight into future developments in electric mobility. What was particularly interesting for the general public was the new collaboration on fast charging technology. Traveling 100 miles should be possible in just five minutes with an electronic fueling pump.
Polestar is working with StoreDot, a developer of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The two companies are working together on an ultra-fast charging solution and plan to fully showcase it in 2024 in the Polestar 5, a future electric car model from Polestar.
XFC pouch cell charging technology
At Polestar Day in Los Angeles last Thursday, StoreDot’s “XFC Pouch Cell Charging” technology was presented along with a prototype of a Polestar battery module that integrates the XFC technology. The so-called “100 in 5” joint technology is said to enable a charging range of up to 100 miles (160 km) in just five minutes and can be seamlessly integrated into existing battery packs without requiring fundamental design changes.
Offer 2024
As part of the ongoing development project, the participating companies have ambitious plans: they intend to demonstrate StoreDot’s XFC technology in a “fully functional prototype” of the Polestar 5 electric car by 2024.
“StoreDot is making tremendous progress in developing ultra-fast charging technology and we are a proud investor and partner in its development,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, of the collaboration. StoreDot’s pioneering ultra-fast charging batteries, combined with our upcoming groundbreaking electric motor, could revolutionize the user experience for electric vehicle owners as vehicles can be charged in minutes.
Also Dr. “Polestar is one of our key investors and cooperation partners in the development of our XFC technology,” said Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot. Next year we will show how the battery module developed by Polestar can be charged with this revolutionary technology. The fear of being charged will soon be a thing of the past.
Pole Star Day 2023
In addition, three other announcements were made during the event: Polestar is launching a pilot project that includes the introduction of a virtual power plant to develop vehicle-to-grid connectivity technology with Polestar 3. This aims to enhance bi-directional energy transfer so that vehicles can be used as part of energy management. It was also announced that production of the Polestar 4 will begin in South Korea in 2025. And: Mobileye and Luminar announced a collaboration to integrate LiDAR technology into the Polestar 4. This move aims to enable the basis of self-driving in upcoming Polestar models.
