San Diego stargazers weren’t disappointed in their hopes of capturing a rare phenomenon that won’t happen again until 2037.
A full moon, supermoon, and blue moon all came together Wednesday in the bright night sky and San Diegan was there for the photo. Take a look at their photos below.
The moon rose on Wednesday evening at 7:29 pm and reached the highest point in the sky at 12:14 am, with a huge illumination of 99%.
What is a blue moon?
As with the names of many astronomical phenomena, the moon will not actually look blue. A “blue moon” is the term given to the second full moon of the month, which usually has only one full moon.
What is a supermoon?
The moon is constantly moving in an ellipse around the earth. So, sometimes it is closer to Earth and sometimes it is far away, according to the American “space” website. NASA.
A supermoon occurs when the moon is full At the same time NASA says the planet is at or near its closest point to Earth, within 90% of the closest it can be to our planet.
The full moon will be closer to us Earthlings than usual, making it appear brighter and more “grand” than the average full moon.
A rare trio of natural phenomena
You will have to wait until January and March 2037 for the next super blue moons to appear, which will happen right after each other!
The last time two supermoons occurred during the same month was in 2018.
NASA says that about 25% of the full moons are supermoons, but only about 3% of the full moons are blue moons. The time between blue supermoons is somewhat irregular, with an average of 10 years and a maximum of 20 years.
The August Full Moon is traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon, according to the Old Farmers’ Almanac. Hundreds of years ago, the full moon illuminated the sturgeon species that were abundant in the Great Lakes during the month of August.
Recent supermoon encounters
You may remember that the first appearance of the supermoon of the year occurred in July. And the Associated Press says that the fourth and last time that the giant moon can be seen this year will be in September. However, the August supermoon was closer to us than these.
If you’re fascinated by the moon, you’ve got NASA Daily Moon guide hereIt is an interactive map to observe the moon every day of the year.
