I’m a computer gamer but I hate it
This statement may be a bit provocative, but I do not subscribe to the “cult” surrounding gaming laptops. It just isn’t for me. While there’s nothing wrong with a laptop like this, I find them bulky and often take up valuable desk space which I prefer
Is it sacrilegious to talk about gaming laptops like that? Maybe, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks so.
Gaming laptops are very expensive
Gaming laptops are expensive to manufacture because they require special cooling due to their compact design. Also, components are difficult or impossible to replace, leaving you needing a new laptop every few years. If you want to save some money, desktop computers are definitely cheaper. (Hint: keep it
Desktop computers are easier to upgrade or repair
Upgrading or repairing desktop computers is much easier, especially if you are doing it yourself
In complete contrast to that
Most gaming laptops look like they are about to take off
One thing that really gets going with gaming laptops is fan noise. They often look like they are about to take off. I’m one of those gamers who likes to focus on what they’re doing, and nothing interrupts the immersion factor like annoying fan noise.
Of course, I could always use a pair of headphones to deafen the sound, but I would prefer my device to be silent from the ground up. I have one pre-configured
My gaming PC doesn’t have to be portable
Let’s be honest. When it comes to size and size, gaming laptops are absolute giants. They often weigh three or more kilos and I don’t feel like carrying that much weight around. I work from home every day. My current setup makes it very easy to sit down, boot up and play. I’m not the type who likes to play on the go.
In addition, gaming laptops usually take up a lot of space. I can’t work if my computer desk is messy, so I keep it as clean as possible. Gaming laptops can take up a lot of valuable desk space, which I prefer saving for my selection of gaming accessories
Heater in the room
Gaming laptops sometimes have trouble dissipating heat generated by powerful internal components. The vents and heatsinks certainly help with heat dissipation, but gaming laptops can get hot on the bottom, and using them on my lap doesn’t risk burning my legs. Again, I prefer my stationary desktop, which sits next to my desk, to my gaming laptop.
Conclusion: Gaming laptops aren’t for me
I’m a born natural, through and through. I treat almost every technical development with a certain degree of skepticism. I still understand how useful it is
But I don’t want to contribute to the ever-growing problem of e-waste. I find that desktop computers generally offer a higher value. They are easier to upgrade, which means you can easily extend the life of your device, and they provide a quieter environment since there is no noise from the fan.
