Review: “Poison Ivy – Metamorphosis 1”

Batman’s longtime foe Poison Ivy left Gotham City and broke up with her lover, Harley Quinn. Because after many changes and transformations in her life, as a plant-human hybrid, she has come to the conclusion that she must eradicate humanity in order to save planet Earth! That’s why it travels across the United States and spreads deadly fungal spores. But she also meets people whose fate touches her heart, and this makes her doubt her decision more and more. Then there’s Jason Woodrow aka Floronic Man, who once experimented with turning Pamela Isley into Poison Ivy and played his own foul game! Prequel to the fantastic POISON IVY solo series.

Along with Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy is arguably one of the characters with the greatest development history in DC. First introduced as a villain, she later became a semi-hero of sorts (although not quite as bright as Batman or Superman) and even formed a relationship with Harley Quinn. In fact, this combo turned out to be quite powerful and it was fun to watch the team up. Now a new comic cycle appears, which will bring some changes to the “Plant Rescuer”.

However, in terms of drawing, one is not as detailed as with other superheroes. While the characters’ facial features still look decent and you can also read the emotions there, a lot of things feel more angular than that. Perhaps this is due to the fact that, especially with backgrounds, more emphasis is placed on minimalism and monochromatic surfaces. It’s not too bad now, but you can admire higher levels of detail here.

You will also feel a little overwhelmed if you join this series as a newcomer. Ivy separated from Harley and merged with an alternate version of herself, giving her new abilities. If you don’t know the history, take a look at the tube first, because there are only a few explanations. For this, Ivy turns into a bloodthirsty killer who desires nothing more than to wipe out humanity – which she then tries to do.

However, Ivy isn’t (anymore) and much of the tape is also spent showing Ivy’s inner struggle. However, this is not quite as straightforward as one would like. While she wonders if what she’s doing is right – especially when she meets good people and they help her too – the killer part clearly outweighs the bad. Unfortunately, her inner turmoil does not come on its own as it might have intended. This only changes at the end, when Ivy is almost at the end of her path – and there’s a cameo from Harley. However, this in turn shows that nothing beats a good dream team ;). In any case, you’ll want to read the next volume right away.

In addition, important messages are sometimes conveyed, such as sexual harassment. However, the main part of the volume is mainly limited to Ivy’s account with its creator, which you can also see here. This should also mean something to die-hard fans, and even if you can see the abuse, The Last Stand leaves you somewhat cold and winning as it ends up developing the aforementioned Ivy character. So on the business side, you can still do one or the other.
