[Kaufberatung] – Proxmox with 2 gaming virtual machines

Welcome,

I want to set up a computer with Proxmox as my platform.
I would then like to install a gaming VM for me and my girlfriend on this Proxmox server.
I’m using a different thread for questions because this is 2 years old and product recommendations are likely to change.

1. Do you want to play on PC? If the answer is yes, then what?
Anything from Minecraft, WoW to ARK

2. Do you want to use the computer to edit photos/music/videos or something similar? As a hobby or are you a professional? What software will you use?
hobby. Proxmox is a hypervisor, because it’s less than 2 times Windows 11 like a gaming VM.

3. Do you have special requirements or wishes (specific brands and manufacturers, overclocking, a particularly quiet PC, RGB lighting, …)?
Preferably a quiet PC, I already have a custom water cooling system, all components are from Corsair, it would be great if it stayed that way.
I’ve been an Intel customer since I got my first computer. So I’d prefer Intel’s solution, but I’ll let that convince me if this is a really bad idea.

4. How many and how many screens do you want to use? Model, resolution, refresh rate (hertz)? Gsync / FreeSync?
One of the virtual machines is currently using 3x4k 120Hz displays and the other 3x FullHD (1920×1080) 120Hz

5. Do you still have an old computer, parts of which can be reused? What is mainly required?
(please with links or exact model name)
Corsair water cooling (2x 360mm radiators with 3x120mm QL fans each, 2x Hydro X XD5 pump/reservoir, 2x Commander and 2x Hub (to connect all fans and pumps to the system))
Corsair Vengence RGB each 3600MHz 2 x 16GB (doubles to 64GB total)
Thermaltake Power 900
Corsair MP600 2TB

Basically I lack ideas for CPU and mainboard (mainboard requires at least 2x16pcie slots and 2x1pcie slots (or larger, doesn’t matter) because proxmox has a delay for USB ports passed thus one USB/pcie card per VM is required)
For the two graphics cards required, I’d probably lean towards the Nvidia/asus rog strix cards, the 2080 and 3080.

6. How much money do you want to spend?
About 1000 euros for the CPU and mainboard together

7. When should I buy a PC?
Mid/end of May 2023

8. Do you want to assemble the computer yourself or have it assembled (by the shop or by helpers (list as sticky))?
Pull yourself together.

Frequently Asked Questions (because they will definitely be asked):
Q1: Why play in a VM at all?
A1: Comfort + Security. Cheaper overall than two high-end gaming PCs.
Q2: Not afraid of 5-10% or more performance loss in games?
A2: No.
Q3: Why is there no Threadripper as a CPU?
A3: In theory I would also use a Threadripper CPU, but unfortunately this is where my planned budget ends
