An open star cluster is a celestial body in which tens to hundreds of stars are sparsely clustered. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), NGC 1858 is a young star cluster about 10 million years old. NGC 1858 also detected protostars, which are stars that have just been born, and it is possible that star formation activity within the cluster is still active or has just stopped.

NGC 1858 is also an emission nebula in which interstellar gas ionized by ultraviolet light from a star emits light, its luster visible from the center to the lower right of the image. According to NASA, the ultraviolet light that ionizes the gas comes from relatively short-lived massive stars, indicating recent star-forming activity in NGC 1858.
