If you try to explain the science in a clear way, you’ll quickly reach for a pen to draw patterns or graphs. So Explaining the Universe Simply skips over complex passages and explains key astronomical questions about space travel, our solar system, and the galaxy with the help of clear infographics.
The book comes from Dorling Kindersley Publishing, known for its detailed and easy-to-understand non-fiction books. This includes the bestselling “Big Ideas” series, which offers insights into complex subject areas with titles such as “The Book of Mathematics” or “The Book of Philosophy.” However, while the “Big Ideas” series relies on explanatory texts with supporting image material, the works in the #dkinfographic series – as the name actually suggests – consists exclusively of infographics.

This approach is ideally suited to the theme of space. Many illustrations explain physical processes or the nature of celestial bodies more clearly than texts can. The book covers an amazing range of topics in five chapters. The first is devoted to basic astronomical concepts such as constellations, sky mapping, and telescopes. This is followed by more chapters about the solar system, stars, galaxies, the universe and finally space travel.
All popular topics like the Big Bang, dark matter, energy, exoplanets and black holes are all covered. As a new version, it also includes current aspects such as gravitational waves and multi-path rockets from the US company SpaceX. However, the James Webb Telescope, launched in December 2021, only entered the book as a side note (in response to the question, “What is the largest space telescope?”).
