Iran announces the launch of a missile containing research equipment
On Thursday, Iranian state television announced sending three devices into space, while negotiations on nuclear energy are underway.
“The Simorgh satellite launcher has sent three research devices into space,” state television quoted Ahmad Hosseini, a spokesman for the Iranian Defense Ministry’s space unit, as saying.

“The research objectives planned for this launch have been achieved,” Ahmed Hosseini said, without elaborating on further details. Tehran announced in February that it had tested a new satellite launcher with a “more powerful” solid-fuel engine.
Ongoing conversations
Thursday’s announcement comes as negotiations to save the 2015 Iran nuclear deal were re-launched at the end of November after a five-month hiatus between Tehran and countries still party to the agreement (France, UK, Germany, Russia and China).
The agreement, ratified by UN Security Council Resolution 2231, obligates Tehran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to carry nuclear charges, including fire using ballistic missile technology.”

The Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, launched its first satellite in April 2020. The United States then considered that this launch proved that Iran’s space program was for military purposes and not for commercial purposes.
Westerners suspect that Iran is seeking to develop long-range ballistic bombers, using satellite launch technology, capable of carrying conventional or nuclear charges. Tehran confirmed that it does not intend to acquire atomic weapons, and stressed that its missile and space programs do not contradict the United Nations resolution.
