It’s good that there’s a lot of talk about the dangers of AI

212 years ago, some Englishmen took up a hammer: fearing for their jobs, so-called Douids smashed the newly introduced mechanical looms. But this did not help, as the Luddites were unable to stop industrialization. However, they were a harbinger of a difficult time – a time that the world could face again thanks to artificial intelligence.

Because 21st century jobs are not threatened by big machines, but by algorithms and educational computer programs in the vastness of the Internet. Like a loom, artificial intelligence (AI) achieves unimaginable leaps in productivity: a dataset is evaluated in a short time, text is generated within seconds, and the software also creates usable images and videos effortlessly.
Manufacture of mental work
Just as it did 200 years ago, this raises concerns: the Bletchley Declaration outlines a total of twelve risks in AI. It remains to be seen whether any of this is justified. For example, the Luddites’ fear of eventually being left jobless turns out to be unfounded in the long run.

However, the nineteenth century was not a good time for textile workers: children also had to toil at the pace of new machinery, disease was rampant in communal housing, wages were low and working hours were long. The internecine riots were followed by a century of intense social conflict.
So it is good that the dangers of artificial intelligence are now being discussed: the mistakes of manufacturing manual labor should not be repeated in the manufacturing of mental work.
