Stockholm. Western Europe is quickly catching up to North America and China when it comes to fifth generation (5G) mobile communications. The number of 5G mobile subscriptions in Western Europe will nearly double from 32 million at the end of 2021 to 63 million by the end of 2022, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report, which was published in Stockholm on Wednesday. For the next year, experts expect Sweden to grow faster in Western Europe: by the end of 2023, they assume that there will be approximately 150 million 5G customers in this part of the world.

The fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) provides much higher data transfer rates than previous UMTS (3G) and LTE (4G) standards. In addition, the delay time (latency) is lower, so that 5G can also be used for real-time applications such as remote device control or telemedicine applications. 5G technology is also more suitable than 3G or 4G to attract fans online, such as visitors to a big football stadium.
According to Ericsson’s study, by the end of 2022, more than 1 billion 5G mobile contracts will be signed worldwide. With high growth rates in Western Europe, the international ranking is also changing. So far, the North American region has been in the lead. More than a third (35 percent) of all mobile customers already have a 5G-compatible mobile phone contract. It is followed by Northeast Asia (34%) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (20%). Western Europe has achieved only 11 percent so far.

A head-to-head race in 5G development
For the period to the end of 2028, Ericsson experts predict that North America (91 percent) and Western Europe (88 percent) will be neck and neck. It is followed by the Gulf countries (86%) and Northeast Asia (74%). The number of global 5G contracts will increase to five billion by the end of 2028.
According to the study, the 5G boom is not only due to 5G smartphones, but also due to the broadband connection of private homes and offices that use mobile communication technology – that is, as an alternative to a fixed network connection. Then the experts talk about Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). FWA is one prominent trend. “Usage of the technology is growing faster than expected and is expected to connect more than 300 million households worldwide by 2028.” After that 5G will be used as the transmission technology for 80 percent of these connections. About 100 million home or office users are currently connected to FWA using various mobile standards.
