Walmart It made plans to close 20 of its stores in 12 states and Washington, D.C., in 2023.
The large retailer initially said it would close 15 stores, but that number has grown to 20.
Walmart is closing four Chicago locations in April, citing financial losses. This follows the company’s decision to close its last remaining stores in Portland, Oregon, in early March.
Portland stores were not meeting financial expectations, according to a company spokesperson. Walmart CEO Doug McMillion also said the record-breaking retail theft hurt the company’s economic performance in 2020.
Walmart will also lay off about 200 people at its New Jersey distribution center and hundreds more In Texas, California, Florida and PennsylvaniaAccording to a Reuters report.
