Vatican: Digital technology must serve the public good

On October 14, the United Nations Telecommunication Conference ended in Bucharest. The high-level meeting was also attended by a delegation from the Vatican.

Raffaella Petrini, Secretary General of the Prefecture of the State of the Vatican, and Secretary of the Communications Department of Mons. Lucio Adrian Ruiz highlighted the need to respect the human being in a technological world and to spread the Gospel on the digital continent.

As Father Raffaella emphasized, the development of digital technology in communications must take into account the common good of citizens and listen to their needs. Pope Francis also reminds us again and again that listening is “the first and indispensable element of good dialogue and communication”.

Monsignor Ruiz described the Holy See’s representation in these decision-making bodies as an opportunity to “bring the challenges and risks of innovation in the age of digital and global communication to secular and technical fields such as the International Telecommunication Conference”. Inclusiveness, development and new technological opportunities, guided by fundamental principles such as respect for human life, the dignity of work and concern for the common home, represent the challenges in which the Holy See can play an important role in the digital transformation of the Holy See in the third millennium.

Communication coordination in the world

The International Telecommunication Union, a special organization of the United Nations headquartered in Geneva, is the only well-established international organization in international law that deals with the technical aspects of telecommunications worldwide. The supreme body of the Federation is the so-called Plenipotentiary Conference. It was held from September 26 to October 14, 2022 in Bucharest (Romania).
