Toyota makes diesel cars fit for renewable fuel

HVO 100 is a hydrogenated vegetable oil that meets the European quality standard EN 15940 for paraffinic diesel. The fuel has a higher cetane number than standard diesel and lower levels of sulfur and aromatics. It is obtained from palm or rapeseed oil and from waste products such as used cooking oil. With HVO 100 instead of the regular diesel, Toyota says no special measures or driving style changes are required. Technically, only the injection system needs to be modified to increase the amount of fuel, since HVO 100 has a lower fuel density than conventional diesel. The mixed use of conventional diesel and HVO 100 is also not problematic.

There are already about 1,000 HVO 100 distributors in Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Supply in Europe is constantly increasing, according to Toyota. Renewable diesel production is set to increase from about four million tons per year at present to 15.5 million tons by 2030.
