Threads to limit the number of posts users can see, like Twitter

Meta’s new social media app, Topics, says it will limit the number of posts some users can see — the same measure that rival social network Twitter took earlier this month.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri made the announcement on Monday mail on topics, saying that “spam attacks have gone viral, so we’re going to have to stress things like rate limits, which will mean more inadvertently limiting active people (false positives)”.

Twitter has been widely criticized for its limit on the number of posts that can be read. Amidst this backlash, Themes was launched and within days it became one of the most widely downloaded social media apps for American users.

But in blaming the spammers, the subjects named the same reason Twitter had previously cited when setting the limits.

Twitter owner Elon Musk initially said that Twitter implemented rate caps to stop “data scraping,” but the company later said in a press release. statement The purpose was to “detect and eliminate bots and other nasty elements that harm the platform”. Twitter’s strict price restrictions have only been in place for a few days.

There is no timetable for how long thread rate limits will apply.

In a tweet responding to a screenshot of Mosseri’s post, Musk appeared amused.

Marketed as the companion app to Instagram, Threads last week reached 100 million users faster than any other app, just five days after its launch. It still has a long way to go to prove it is a long-term competitor to Twitter, said Pinar Yildirim, a professor of marketing at the University of Pennsylvania who studies social networks.

“Now, users will rate which network they prefer,” Yıldırım said. “Bots have been a major problem that Twitter has faced…. The same thing threads with a growing user base have to learn is how to prioritize the best accounts from the worst accounts.”

Data from Google Trends showed that search interest for the platform had waned since the early days of its launch. Threads is still not available for download in Europe due to EU data privacy regulations.

After Mosseri’s announcement, the company told The Post it had little to add beyond what he posted.
