This week's Linux news: What's new in Gnome, AMD ROCm, LXQt, and gaming laptops

GNOME's mother sees new features for the upcoming release of GNOME 46.1

the X11 Window manager and Wayland The native display server, which forms the basis for Gnome, receives special innovations for Nvidia users. The patch notes show that, among other things, input lag issues under X11 when using Nvidia hardware have been resolved.

Changes include:

  • Fixed night color issues for screens without Ed Pinned.
  • Bugs related to Xwayland clients have been fixed.
  • Thanks to bug fixes, laptops with dedicated Nvidia GPUs, specifically Nvidia Hybrid Graphics, achieve significantly higher performance under certain conditions.

AMD Compute Platform ROCm gets video decoding

Rookm AMD's software suite for computing tasks on graphics processors, similar to Coda. the Version 6.1 This week introduces support for Ubuntu 22.04.4 rocDecode lonliness.

Video streams are decoded in hardware on the graphics card and individual frames can be stored in graphics memory. This means that post-processing can be applied to it without having to send the data over a PCIe connection. As an additional function, thanks to the rocDecode API, multiple instances of video encoders can be run, depending on the number of media drivers available (VNC) on the graphics card. In other words, multiple video streams can be processed in parallel.

The lightweight LXQt desktop is based on Qt6 and Wayland

With version 2.0.0 of the lightweight Qt-based desktop LXQt, sets the project to Qt 6.6. Similar to the KDE 6 release with support for the new Qt version, Wayland improvements and updated desktop applications are included. Although final support for Wayland won't be implemented until version 2.1.0, many parts of the desktop are already designed to use it. The main focus of the release was to introduce the new Qt6 version.

Tuxedo updates its AMD Linux Sirius 16 Gen2 gaming laptop

Formulating Augsburg Linux Tuxedos, which represents pre-configured Linux-compatible laptops and PCs that support it, introduces a new version of the Sirius 16 gaming laptop. In Edition 2, there's an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS at the heart. In addition to eight CPU cores, there's also a dedicated graphics card in the form of an AMD RX 7600M XT. The 16.1-inch screen has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and offers a refresh rate of 165Hz. Up to 96GB of DDR5-5600 memory can be configured as RAM. In terms of interfaces, the laptop, housed in an aluminum casing, has two M.2 slots, USB 4.0 and HDMI 2.1. Full system characteristics can be found at Tuxedo product page.
