The new 5G mobile communications standard has become an integral part of Swiss technology. In the future, 5G technology will be more important than ever.
The basics in a nutshell
- 5G is the most efficient of all mobile phone generations.
- In everyday life, 5G technology gives us a much faster mobile network and more connected devices.
The Swiss in rural areas in particular could sing a song about this: The amount of digital data is increasing, but Internet connections cannot keep up. The introduction of 5G will end reliance on cables of any kind.
The new mobile communications standard, combined with Swiss technology, makes it possible to transfer large amounts of data on a mobile basis.
Swiss technology: 5G advantages at a glance
The 5G mobile communications standard allows Swiss technology to achieve several development leaps. These rates exceed higher data transfer rates of up to ten gigabits per second. It's not just the Swiss people who benefit from this, as they were previously unable to stream anything online due to poor internet connections.
5G technology enables streaming in 4K Ultra HD. Among other things, it allows access to AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality).
This also applies to cameras in public places. This means that police can watch HD videos in real time. This allows rapid intervention in the event of problems and facilitates the identification of criminals.
The problem of network crashes caused by high data traffic should become a thing of the past.
This is how companies benefit from 5G
Thanks to 5G technology, up to one million objects can be connected within an area of 1 square kilometre. This opens up completely new possibilities in logistics and production.
Self-driving and automated operations via remote control are becoming the norm.
This also applies to the field of health. With higher data transfer rates, robots can also be controlled more easily, for example. Today, they perform examinations and operations autonomously and send the data to human doctors at control points.
Opinion poll
Will you get a 5G phone?
Yes, I move with the times.
No, I'm still waiting.
I already have a 5G mobile phone.
Even 2GB is a big step forward
The 10 or 20 Gbps transfer rates advertised by mobile phone companies are still fictitious in Switzerland. But where mobile data transmission is required, Swiss technology already takes advantage of the currently possible speed of 2 Gbps.
Private users who are still using the LTE mobile network should definitely prepare for the near future. This also means that the upcoming smartphone should be 5G compatible.
Don't be afraid of radiation
When the rollout of 5G technology became known in 2017, concerns about dangerous mobile phone radiation emerged (again). A popular initiative was even launched to stop 5G networks, but it failed due to a lack of signatures.
In fact, 5G technology requires the installation of new antennas, so-called adaptive antennas. This information is directed specifically to individual users and is no longer directed only to the public.
However, they do not produce any additional radiation, as a large-scale test conducted by OFCOM (Federal Office of Communications) showed.
Experts like environmental epidemiologist Martin Rösli confirm this in an interview with SRF: He points out that 90 percent of mobile phone radiation comes from your cell phone and not from transmission towers.
