The Spanish Federation introduces a new offside technology

The new offside technology can already be used during European championships. Now the next top league decides on this – in Germany they will have to be patient.

Unlike goal-line technology, semi-automatic offside detection will be used in La Liga from next season. The Spanish Football Federation has now decided on this and justified the decision with player safety. The second league will follow a later season.

But in this country, we have to be patient for the time being. Video referee chief Jochen Drees indicated a fundamental interest in implementing this technology two years ago, but it seems that this will not happen until 2025 at the earliest.

This is how the system works.

One reason for this could also be the cost. According to FIFA, the system relies on 12 cameras installed under the pitch roof. These devices scan each player’s position in 29 places and 50 times per second. In addition, a sensor on the ball detects the exact moment the playing device is released.

In this way, not only can decisions be made faster but also more accurate than with traditional VAR. The controversial scenes in the Germany vs Denmark match provide some examples of this.

In Italy, semi-automatic offside technology has been available to referees since the start of 2023. The Premier League is expected to follow suit in the autumn. Shareholders have unanimously agreed to this.
