On June 21, gaming peripheral maker Retro-Bit announced the “BIG6” console that can be used with PC and Nintendo Switch. The assortment consists of the following three models, wired and wireless. The wired model will be launched abroad in October this year, and the wireless model will be released abroad in November.
・ BIG6 Control Panel for SEGA Genesis (wired)
Exclusive to Mega Drive ・ $16.99 (about 2,300 yen)
・ BIG6 Arcade Pad with USB (wired)
Compatible with PC / Nintendo Switch, etc. ・ $19.99 (about 2,700 yen)
・ BIG6 2.4GHz Wireless Arcade Board (Wireless)
Compatible with PC / Nintendo Switch / Mega Drive, etc. ・$34.99 (about 4800 yen)
The BIG6 features a design with a massive motor controller as an element. Since the Sega logo can be seen on the front, it looks like it will be officially licensed from the company and sold. The developer, Retro-Bit, partnered with Sega in 2017 and has a track record of working on Sega’s official clone consoles for the Mega Drive and Sega Saturn (Related Articles）。
On the other hand, this time BIG6 announced that it is not a reprint console. At first glance, it looks like the control panel that came with the Mega Drive, but it has 6 ABCXYZ buttons instead of the 3 ABC buttons. This is the style of Fighting Pad 6B, which became the standard console for the Mega Drive 2. In other words, the BIG6 is a console created by combining these two designs, old and new.
The BIG6 Controller for SEGA Genesis is a wired controller with a terminal for Mega Drive / Genesis. The cable length is 3 meters. The MODE button is also installed on the right side of the bumper. In the Fighting Pad 6B, the START button was located in the middle, but on this product, it was moved to the top of the 6 button, which is close to the style of the control panel.
BIG6 Arcade Pad with USB is a wired controller compatible with PC and Nintendo Switch. It can also be used with the Mega Drive Mini (it is very likely that it can also be used with the Mega Drive Mini 2 due to be released in October of this year). The basic specifications are the same as the above model, but instead of the MODE button, the left and right fenders are equipped with LR buttons. A HOME / Select button has been added to the front side.
The BIG6 2.4GHz Wireless Arcade Pad is a wireless version of the USB model mentioned above. It has a built-in 500mAh battery and can be charged with a USB Type-C cable. The mega drive receiver and USB connection are included respectively, and it can be played wirelessly even with the mega drive.
The BIG6 Control Pad for SEGA Genesis and BIG6 Arcade Pad with USB will be available in October this year, and the BIG6 2.4GHz Wireless Arcade Pad will be available in November. Currently, reservations are accepted at US retailer Castlemania. The store also supports overseas shipping.
For Retro-Bit products, for example, the reprinted version of the Sega Saturn board mentioned above is also sold on Amazon in Japan. BIG6 may also be released in Japan in the future.
