Grogu is headed to the big screen. The Mandalorian and Grogua new film directed by The Mandalorian Creator Jon Favreau is visiting Lucasfilm and is expected to film later this year.

Favreau, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni will produce the film, which the studio said will be its first. star Wars The film will go into production in 2019 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. There has been some speculation that the film starring Daisy Ridley will be the first one out of the gate, but it looks like the project will take longer to get into hyperspace.

“I loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said. “The prospect of bringing The Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is very exciting.”

The Mandalorian Launched in November 2019 as the flagship show for Disney+, the character then known as Baby Yoda became a pop culture phenomenon. Pedro Pascal leads the series as Din Djarin, aka The Mandalorian, a warrior who takes a reluctant (at first) interest in Grogu. The third season of the series concluded last year, and launched a number of spin-offs, including Boba Fett book And Ahsokawhich has a second season in development.

This development likely represents a turning page for Lucasfilm, which has struggled to articulate a vision of what Star Wars should be on the big screen, developing multiple properties that never make it to the finish line. But at Star Wars Celebration in London last year, the Disney-owned studio revealed plans for three projects that appear to be moving forward, including Ridley's project. Other films include a big-screen film directed by Filoni, and another set in the distant past by James Mangold.

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have brought two new and beloved characters to Star Wars, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” Kennedy said.
