The Eagle Nebula's “Pillar of Creation” seen in X-rays and infrared from images celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Chandra Gateway to the Universe

The Eagle Nebula's “Pillar of Creation” seen in X-rays and infrared from images celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Chandra Gateway to the Universe

This image captures part of the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16, M16), located about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Serpens. This region is called the Pillars of Creation because of the dark, pillar-like shape of the nebula.

The columns branching out from lower left to upper right are molecular clouds of gas and dust. Within the molecular cloud, new stars are forming as densely packed material collapses under its own gravity. The white, blue, red, yellow and purple spots of light around the column are young stars emitting X-rays and infrared light.

This image is one of 25 images of astronomical objects released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of NASA's Chandra X-ray Space Telescope. X-rays are electromagnetic waves with wavelengths invisible to humans, but here Chandra's observation data are colored red and blue. This image was created using infrared (red, green, and blue) observation data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as well as observation data from Chandra.
