Developer Brendan Greene revolutionized gaming with the creation of PUBG. His new game is supposed to represent an entire planet.
Who is the person you are talking about? Brendan Greene is one of the most important people when talking about how gaming has evolved over the past 10 years. If you’re wondering who’s responsible for the many “Battle Royale” shooters that came out between 2016 and 2020, his name is sure to come up.
Greene was the lead developer in charge of PUBG. Years ago, he developed a Battle Royale mod for DayZ and helped create H1Z1: King of the Hill (via Vice). In doing so, it has had a huge impact on gaming as we experience it today, with “Battle Royale” games like Fortnite, CoD Warzone, and Apex Legends becoming indispensable.
PUBG remains one of the top five most played games on Steam today, with an average of 220,000 players on the platform as of February 2023 (via Steam charts).
What is Green currently working on? Greene now owns his own development studio, PlayerUnknown Productions. He is currently working with his team on the ‘Artemis Project’.
Project Artemis is a type of game whose central element is a huge procedurally generated planet, Green reveals in an interview with the English-language online magazine Computer game enthusiasts.
What kind of game is this? Greene PC Gamer gives many ideas about the project, which he himself does not want to call a “game”, although there should be such gameplay elements as survival mechanics, exploration and some kind of Civilization mode.
However, according to Green, the focus of “The Game” is not just survival. Players must not be locked into a specific activity or genre. You should be able to do whatever you want on this planet. Green is primarily concerned with creating space for activities.
As for the backstory, Greene reveals that Project Artemis is set about 500 years in the future. At a time when humanity has not been on earth for more than 300 years. Comic books are planned for more detail on the science.
PlayerUnknown Productions is also working on a Project Artemis technology demo called “Intro” that tests the tools used in the development of Project Artemis. You can watch the first teaser here:
Is there life on this planet? Greene tells PC Gamer that he wants AI companions and wild animals for his planet. You also have to share the planet with other players.
Judging by Greene’s description, the AI companions are reminiscent of Kelvin, the helpful NPC from the hit survival game Sons of the Forest. So you should be able to assign AI assistants various tasks such as chopping wood, science work or metal construction.
With wild animals, Greene also imagines that players’ actions can affect the population of different creatures and it becomes a living world. For example, he cites a regional deer crowd that occurs because players have hunted down all the bears in the area.
Green’s ideas for Project Artemis are very ambitious. One of them could remind Star Citizen. The alpha launch there lately has become challenging.
Star Citizen apologizes for Alpha launch: ‘We expected the hiccups, but this was not acceptable’
