Representatives of the three organisers, department chair Annette, emphasized that “games have a lot to do with education and can be used in and out of the classroom to enhance social and communication skills, problem-solving thinking, creativity and even physical fitness.” Mohlenhof from Paderborn, HNF – CEO Dr. Jochen Fehof and school inspector Julia Schluetter from the local school authority. Together, they invite students, parents, teachers and anyone interested to workshops and lectures in the subject week.
From Monday, May 16 to Saturday, May 21, it will be all about the Heinz Nixdorff Museum and online forum on gaming and education. There he shows, for example, how a classroom can be turned into an escape room with analog and digital puzzles or how computer games for storytelling can be incorporated into literature lessons. Integration through barrier-free games is a topic as well, as is the case in neighboring Denmark, where online games have long been a part of daily lessons.
Games only work in front of the computer? Not in the workshop at Ahorn Sportpark. The lecturers demonstrate how computer games such as Fortnite or Mario Kart can be replayed in school lessons. This not only gets students and their teachers moving in a sporty way, but also opens up new ways to talk to young people about the dangers and opportunities of online gaming.
At the end of the theme week, the organizers invited children and young people to highlight: “Game Jam”. During the two-day workshop on Friday and Saturday, participants develop and program their own game with graphics, music, sound, and an exciting story.
“Computers have always been around, there have been computer games. Playing is fun, and it opens up a lot of opportunities to rediscover and redesign teaching and learning. We hope that many more interested people will join us on this exciting journey,” say Mohlenhof, Fehof and Schluether.
Participation in workshops and lectures is free for all interested parties. There is only a ten euro fee for Game Jam. Pre-registration is required and is now possible at www.bildungsregion-paderborn.de.
