The world of “The Boys” may soon expand to include Mexico.
According to sources, Amazon is currently developing a Spanish-language spinoff of the popular superhero series based on Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson comic books that will be set in Mexico City. The exact details of the plot are being kept secret.
Like “The Boys,” it will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Sources say that Gareth Dunnett Alcocer is attached to write. Dunnet-Alcocer recently wrote the screenplay for the DC film “Blue Beetle” starring Xolo Maridueña. “The Boys” creator Eric Kripke will executive produce via Kripke Enterprises along with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver of Point Gray Pictures and Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film. Sources also say that Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal will executive produce under the La Corriente del Golfo banner, although deals are still in the works for the series.
If the project goes ahead, it will be the third series set in the world of “The Boys” after Mothership, which is scheduled to air its fourth season in 2024. Prime Video recently launched the first season of “Gen V.” The film takes place at a superhero college run by Vought International. The show premiered on September 29 and was renewed for a second season in October.
Prior to this, Prime Video aired the animated anthology series “The Boys Presents: Diabolical”, which featured eight stand-alone stories and featured several actors from “The Boys” reprising their roles in the voice cast.
This will also be Amazon’s latest attempt at local language production to expand the universe of one of its streaming shows. Amazon is currently preparing such spinoffs of its high-budget spy series “Citadel,” including shows set in India, Italy and abroad.
“The Boys” has proven to be one of Amazon’s most popular originals to date. Since the show launched in 2019, it has ranked high on Nielsen’s streaming charts whenever new episodes air. The series has also received eight Emmy nominations to date, including a nomination for 2021’s Outstanding Drama Series.
