The Appearance of Mars as Seen in Ultraviolet Light Observed by NASA’s Mars Probe “MAVEN” on the 10th Anniversary of its Launch | sorae Portal site to space

This is the planet Mars created based on data obtained by the IUVS ultraviolet spectrometer installed in the Mars Orbiter MAVEN (short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Because IUVS is observed in the ultraviolet wavelength range (110 to 340 nanometers) that is not visible to humans, the images are colored according to wavelength.

According to NASA, the data used to create the image was obtained in July 2022, when Mars’ southern hemisphere was in summer, and the south polar cap, shown in white, was shrinking in the area. The tall, cloud-shrouded Valles Marineris is shown at top left in yellow-brown, and the haze-shrouded Argire Basin is shown at bottom left in pink. In the southern hemisphere of Mars, MAVEN observations data show that hydrogen tends to flow into space during the summer, when heat and dust storms tend to carry water vapor to high altitudes.

The following image was also generated from data acquired by IUVS MAVEN, taken in the Northern Hemisphere in January 2023. According to NASA, the striking purple color indicates the distribution of ozone. During the cold polar nights, ozone accumulates in the Martian polar region, and with the advent of spring, it is destroyed by chemical reactions with water vapor. Part of Valles Marineris is shown at lower left.

MAVEN was launched 10 years ago in November 2013 to study the interaction between Mars’ upper atmosphere, ionosphere, sun, solar wind, and atmosphere. In September 2024, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of our arrival on Mars. By studying the Martian atmosphere lost in outer space, we can gain knowledge about the history of the atmosphere and climate of Mars, the liquid water that once existed on Mars, and the habitability of Mars. a task.
