‘Star Trek VII-X’ on Ultra HD Blu-ray: Detailed reviews of 4K premieres at bluray-disc.de
03/30/2023
After the first Star Trek films with the original crew led by Captain James T. Kirk celebrate their 4K premieres, Paramount Home Entertainment will, too.Star Trek VII: The Generations(USA 1994; OT: “Star Trek: Generations”),Star Trek VIII: First Contact(USA 1996; OT: “Star Trek: First Contact”),Star Trek IX: Insurrection(USA 1998; The Old Testament: “Star Trek: Insurrection”) andStar Trek X: Enemies(USA 2002) debuted in distribution by Universal Pictures Ultra HD Blu-ray launch. Both science fiction adventures starring Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard were released in Ultra High Definition including HDR and Dolby Vision With German version in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and English audio in Dolby TrueHD 7.1 plus voice and text commentary in bag including Blu-ray disc with extras. Remastered HD editions are also available for purchase individually in Amaray packaging. You can find out what else the versions offer and whether the 4K upgrades are worthwhile in the new reviews on bluray-disc.de. Our reviewer Jörn Pomplitz looked at all four conversions on UHD Blu-ray and wrote a detailed review of each. Pomplitz concludes his “Star Trek VII: Generations” review with the following conclusion:
With “Meeting of Generations”, the baton was also successfully delivered to the big screen and the “new” Enterprise crew led by Jean-Luc Picard was brought into the race. The movie is still doing very well nearly 30 years after its premiere and delivers all the trademark Trekkie should appeal to. However, the ultra-resolution implementation leaves a somewhat mixed impression, because in addition to some really good and detailed settings including richer colors, there is unfortunately also occasional stronger film grain and a lot of blur. The real 4K feel doesn’t want to be felt at this point, which is why it might be a good idea to do a visual test before making a blind purchase. From an audio standpoint, despite the flat and lossless audio formats, there’s hardly any reason to criticize – the German and English soundtracks come out really well here and you can often look forward to decent support from the subwoofer. The bottom line is that it’s entertaining entertainment anyway, but it still lacks some fine-tuning in terms of image technology.
