Skills game for kids, review, test

Yes Where do you jump? The good old frog jumps with a new design and a little more excitement, because each round there are different objectives for the frogs. This is the starting point for the children’s game Happy Hopping by Kirsten Hiese (Pegasus Spiele).

What is Happy Jump about?

All the frogs are jumping over the four ponds – everyone wants to catch the best mosquitoes. This action-packed game is chaotic, with all players playing at the same time.

Game style

The bottom of the box is also the game board and represents the four colored complexes. Each player chooses a frog color and takes all ten frogs and a lily pad of the same color. Everyone also gets a bouncy stick.

Frogs are forced to jump with a bouncy stick or with their fingers – aiming improves with enough practice. Each frog is only allowed to start from its own lily pad – if the frog leaves the paper once in the round – wherever it jumps, it will not be there again until the next round.

In each round, each player draws a card stating the goal of the current round. The objective of the round is the same for all players, but the seating arrangement and thus the orientation of the game box results in a different spatial arrangement for each player. To do this, each player places their circular target in front of the side of their box so that the direction of the card matches the direction of the box.

Fortunately, the “game board” is so well designed graphically that you can instantly tell which frog color starts on which side of the game board and which “special” pool is the corresponding color. The eight quest cards are different and also vary in difficulty:

  • All the frogs are in their pond.
  • Get the most frogs in the four ponds.
  • First, a frog in the middle of the meadow – that is, on the edge of the cardboard between the puddles.
  • There is exactly one frog in each pond.
  • And a few more…

A round ends when all players let all their frogs jump (a “normal” round) or when the first player achieves the goal of the round (e.g., exactly one frog in each group). As a bonus, there are mosquitoes for frogs – two mosquito chips if everything is correct, otherwise still one mosquito – having everything. Anyone who was particularly fast also gets a beetle chip.

game over

After the eight rounds, the game is over and now it is decided who is the main frog catching the mosquitoes. To do this, a scoring tile is revealed – it has a mosquito depicted in a certain color. Now all players turn over the mosquito chips they have collected and count how many mosquitoes of that color are on their chips. Whoever has the most is the main mosquito frog.

Conclusion about happy jumping

The different prizes are a great mechanism with kids. So the kid who was able to collect fewer chips could always be the main frog of the mosquito.

This was not the only trophy to be won. Whoever was able to collect the most mosquito chips overall gets the title of Frog Champion. And anyone who was particularly fast could call themselves turbo frogs.

Happy Hopping – a popular fun game with a new look. I would like to play a round.
