Philipp Schlew from investor magazine “Der Aktionär” takes a closer look at shares of MTU Aero Engines AG (ISBN: DE000A0D9PT0, WKN: A0D9PT, ticker symbol: MTX, NASDAQ OTC symbol: MTUAF) in our current stock analysis.
Engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines has reached an important milestone in its “flying fuel cell” project. With the successful completion of tests of a liquid hydrogen fuel system for civil aviation, the technology could become a sustainable alternative to conventional aircraft engines in the future.
In cooperation with MT Aerospace, MTU is currently developing a complete liquid hydrogen fuel system for civil aviation, consisting of tanks, sensors, heat exchangers, valves, safety systems and controls.
Hydrogen is transported and stored in liquid form at a temperature of about -250°C. During operation, the cooled LH2 must be heated, converted to a gaseous state and then fed to the fuel cell.
However, MTU wants and should take its time and plans to use the “flying fuel cell” system only on shorter routes in passenger and regional aircraft from 2035. Approval of such a new technology for aviation could take years. With improved efficiency, it should also be possible to use FFC on short- and medium-haul routes from 2050.
The stock was not greatly affected by the news, but fell by about half a percent. The sharp long-term uptrend remains in place. The record of €289.30 is now within reach.
Even if the use of a hydrogen cell is still a long way off, it is an important step. The MTU share cannot be stopped and therefore remains a recommendation of AKTIONÄR. Anyone who is invested should stay on board. Philipp Schlew of Der Aktionär says newcomers should wait for the setback. (Analysis dated September 27, 2024)
