Samsung bans the use of AI such as ChatGPT to employees after chatbot abuse

Samsung restricts the use of so-called generative AI tools like ChatGPT to employees after the company found misuse of these services.

The South Korean tech giant confirmed to CNBC on Tuesday that it is temporarily restricting the use of generative artificial intelligence through the company’s personal computers.

Employees of one of Samsung’s largest divisions were informed of the move in a memo at the end of April after cases of misuse of the technology occurred.

ChatGPT is a viral AI chatbot trained on massive amounts of data and capable of generating response to user queries. It is a form of what is called generative artificial intelligence.

Samsung does not have its own AI product yet. ChatGPT is developed by US company OpenAI backed by Microsoft while other generative AI products include Google Bard. Entering sensitive company data into these foreign-owned services can be a source of concern for companies worried about leakage of critical information.

Samsung required employees to take precautions when using ChatGPT and other products outside of work and advised workers not to enter any personal or company-related information into the Services.

In a company-wide survey conducted by Samsung last month, 65% of respondents said there were concerns about security risks when using generative AI services.

Samsung isn’t the only company restricting technology use. US investment bank JPMorgan It said Restricted ChatGPT use among employees earlier this year. And Amazon this year It said Warn employees not to upload confidential information, including code, to ChatGPT.

Companies are evaluating ways in which generative AI capabilities can be used in their businesses. ChatGPT can help engineers generate computer code for example, to speed up their tasks. Software developers at Goldman Sachs use generative AI to help generate code.

Despite recent limitations, Samsung is looking for ways in which generative AI can be safely used to enhance employee productivity and efficiency.
