This time our gaming group got to take a look at Goblin Coaster by Jan Meyberg and Ursula Hermens-Meyberg. Both the title and design make you curious. Finally, the question immediately arises of how to implement a roller coaster game in a board game.
So our group immediately unpacked the HUCH box and examined its contents. Inside, everything looks high-quality and well thought-out, thanks to its special compartments and holders. The toy material doesn't need to be hidden either, as it's made of extra-thick cardboard with high-gloss printing. Finally, the toy material comes with a large canvas bag that can easily fit the track parts.
Goblin Coaster: Let's go!
At first the dense instructions were intimidating, but we could give everything straight away. On the one hand, the instructions are multilingual and on the other hand, they are written in very large letters and contain pictograms.
This makes the Goblin Coaster rules very fun to read and easy to understand. Another plus point is that the instructions are organized into levels. Simply put, each level brings more different rules to the game. In this simple and very attractive way, the group of players also found it easy to understand the rules.
We build together against time
The goal in Goblin Coaster is to achieve a set game goal together. This could be reaching the finish platform, completing a slalom race, or building the path to treasure. Each person takes a turn, pulling a piece from the dark bag and trying to continue building the road. At the same time, the hourglass, which represents the moving cart, runs relentlessly and continues towards the abyss. Alternatively, there is a nice second hourglass, which gives beginners or kids more time.
But just building a Goblin Coaster isn't enough. Together you must clear obstacles or adhere to additional rules on the action squares. In the end, each group can decide the difficulty level for themselves by adding or deleting game elements. This makes it possible to design the game to your own taste.
The Goblin Coaster is fun for kids and adults
Thanks to the modular structure, our gaming group had so much fun that they were able to get started with the first game very quickly. Even younger gaming groups were able to experience the imaginative roller coaster because the difficulty could be easily adjusted to suit the people attending.
If someone asks about defects or problems, look for them with a magnifying glass. Our gaming tests showed that the connectors between track segments are very tightly punched. Especially at the hectic pace and under time pressure, there is a risk of railway parts being damaged.
It would also be nice if the end parts were named more clearly in good instructions. Because in every round of our game, someone stumbles upon the final parts rule. Here it would be a good idea to include the endings of the paths as separate content or present them clearly in some other way.
Review conclusion
However, this is all wailing on a high level, which is where Goblin Coaster brought us so much fun. So there will certainly be many evenings when our goblins run hurriedly through the mine to get the train to its destination.
