Review: “Star Wars – Han Solo and Chewbacca: Dead or Alive”

The Han & Chewie story continues in our review.

Contents (fuss)

Chewbacca is in prison, Han Solo has been abandoned half-dead on a distant planet, and the Falcon has disappeared along with the urn they were supposed to get for Jabba the Hutt. A very bad start for Han and Chewie. It is a feature that Chewbacca’s cell gene is Maz Kanata. Together, the two come up with a plan to escape while Han recovers from his injuries and attempts to leave a distant planet without a ship.

criticism

It’s time for the sequel to Han Solo & Chewbacca, after the first part ended with a big cliffhanger in which Chewie ended up in prison. In terms of graphics, the same team is of course at the start as before, so there’s no reason to complain, at least here. The level of detail is good as usual, the facial features and backgrounds are unmistakable and also provide a high level of detail.

Story-wise, the volume is also very interesting. Chewbacca’s escape from prison was well staged, even if the plan was not new. With Maz Kanata, one of the fan favorite characters also appears, who can once again show what she is made of. Then there’s new addition Phaedra, whose dry sense of humor fits perfectly with the Han/Chewie duo and brings joy to the comic in more than one place.

The only thing you can complain about here is the release of Evazan and Bondu Baba as well. They’ll cause some trouble for Luke at the cantina in Episode 4 a few years later. But sometimes Han has to swallow a frog or two. Up to this point, the whole thing has been presented in a casual, choppy manner and perhaps has some problems at first, especially due to the aforementioned prison scenes.

But after escaping from prison, at the latest, things really started to improve. Because who’s stupid enough to break into Tarkin’s chambers? Exactly, Han, as he was appropriately parodied in the comics. Even the little edge works out with a slight smile, though Tarkin’s reaction to the theft was certainly interesting.

Then there’s Hans “Dad”, the Marshall family, the villains from the last volume, Greedo and the contents of the jar. Yes, you can see there’s a lot going on and you actually can’t catch your breath as Han stumbles from funny scene to funny scene in his usual way. At this pace, you can easily overlook the fact that a personal moment or two might fall by the wayside.

By the way, Greedo isn’t the only Easter egg appearing here, even if the scenes with him heighten the animosity with Han. Ultimately it will be interesting to see whether or not Phaedra will join the Falcon crew. Like mine? Falcon? Oh yes of course there is still…
