Review: “Star Wars – A Halcyon Story”

A new Star Wars comic that spans a new era.

For more than 300 years, the Halcyon has been the preeminent cruise ship in the galaxy. With the rise and fall of republics and empires, this luxury starship has remained constant. This volume tells the amazing story of the ship, its crew and guests, among whom are old acquaintances from different eras of the Star Wars universe, but also new characters!

criticism

The Halcyon is the next coaster from Disney’s theme park, specifically in the Star Wars universe right there. With the current comics, this ship has now been given its own story uniting all (new) eras of the Star Wars universe. There is a frame story in the time of the new trilogy, where stories from the past are included over and over again. But we’ll get to that in a moment.

You can’t complain about the graphics and it’s up to standard (Star Wars) goodness. The characters always look completely alive and the emotions come across, the backgrounds have a high level of detail and you never lose track of the battle and space scenes. So far, very well known.

The frame story mentioned takes place around 33 NSY, shortly before Episode 7. During the attack on the luxury cruiser by pirates, a service bot there tells a few stories from the past. The actual story isn’t that important: Grandpa and his granddaughter Simena must fight pirates with the crew – that’s all. So it’s basically a negligible story, and unfortunately that also applies to the rest of the stories told throughout this volume. It is very clear that the comic is nothing but extra income for the park, its visitors and its fans.

The first story jumps to the time of the High Republic and shows us Nihil’s attack on Halcyon. Surprisingly, he is very successful despite his grandfather’s presence. However, even here, one or another problem with the stories becomes apparent. You don’t have to expect deeper personal stories. You make an effort, for example in this first story with Burgy, who has to confront his feelings, but in general, all of the stories fall short for that.

The following story moves to the time of the first episode and features two of his old acquaintances: Aurra Sing and Zam Wesell. They have to take part in a safari and even look good doing it. The dynamic between the two is just right and the fact that they’re not one of the better known heroes helps the story immensely here. Team-Up may be expanded further in the future.

It extends back to the time of the Clone Wars. Here Ventress comes aboard to confront a traitor and a skirmish with Anakin ensues. So far so well known this story doesn’t offer any new major differences either – except maybe that Ani and Padmé are actually having a good time. Like I said, the beginnings of the personal scenes, sometimes sometimes less successful, are definitely there.

Then we move on to episode four and the next story is one of the highlights as seeing Maz Kanata and Lando in action is always so much fun. Which is the case, because the grueling raid the two make on Halcyon is good to watch and also explains how Maz grabbed a certain chest. Entertaining and entertaining.

Finally, we jump to the time of the New Republic, where bounty hunters kidnap an artist’s partner from the ship. Aside from the bounty hunters around Bossk, this story in particular suffers from the anonymity of the new characters that were introduced here, but then probably won’t be shown again in any other media.

Overall, it remains a somewhat mixed volume.
