Review: Obi-Wan Kenobi 1×01 – “Part 1”

Obi-Wan is finally allowed back! In our review, we explain what’s inside the first episode of the new “Star Wars” series. Warning spoilers!

memories

In the beginning you can watch a set from “Episode One” to “Episode Three”, which is excellently presented to the world. Well, this is nothing new for fans and in general it must be said that the share of fan service in this episode is very high again. However, he is not quite as pushy as in “Boba Fett”.

A small feature here is definitely the model that Ben brings to young Luke. He has the form in “Episode Four”. Although Owen returns it to him, somehow she will find her way back to Luke in the end. It was already known from “legends” that things were not going well between Owen and Ben in particular. This strained relationship is also present in the new law.

Visually, the series does everything right again and stays true to its roots. So you feel instantly transported into the realm of “Star Wars,” even if you’ve seen enough of Tatooine – thanks to Mando and Boba Fett – by now. But luckily at the end of the episode, she’s moved to another planet.

By the way, the series line is also presented in the form of cinema films. However, the music can’t tear me from the stool just yet. But that might still be like Boba Fett.

But back to Obi or Ben. Now he works in a meat factory that cuts desert fish (!). But he’s surprisingly reserved here, because he’s treated unfairly and then, when Owen is threatened, everything is on task. Although I hope he still has a shower nearby because 10 years without hygiene seems a bit extreme to me even for Tatooine. At least the scene between him and Java is very funny.

But of course the bad guys aren’t idle either, the detectives are still chasing the Capricorn. This time they are looking for a Jedi on Tatooine, which of course puts Ben in danger. The scene in which said Capricorn is tracked down is well staged again and shows us an old school fanatic for the first time with the third sister. She is also obsessed with Obi-Wan. Although I still agree with the fact that it has not been found for 10 years. But is there more to this obsession?

If I had to guess, I’d say she was one of the young ones. They initially fled the temple and blamed Obi for abandoning it. But we’ll see where this story leads.

The only criticism here is that the Grand Inquisitor does not appear as menacing as in “The Rebels”. The animated series undoubtedly has an advantage in this regard. Other than that, a galaxy appears under the Empire’s control, although Tatooine, “far out there,” is not as effective as the other planets. However, there are no concerns about showing Riva cutting off a woman’s hand. Sure, it’s still not bloody (okay, it’s a lightsaber, after all), but it’s still tough and definitely scene-emphasis.

The question of whether they had not questioned the young Jedi, whom they later killed, should also be asked at this point. After all, that could have led them straight to Obi-Wan…

Aldran & Co

But the series is not only about Obi-Wan, it is also about Leia. So we not only see Alderaan in more detail than before, but also that Leia was actually a true roast at the time. So not only can the actress who played Brieha return to her role, but Jimmy Smits can also star again in the role of Bail Organa.

Leah is also learning her first steps in the diplomatic arena and, like Spock, is subject to some form of discrimination. However, she still has a lot to learn. These sights are also beautiful, but they are accompanied by a small low point. Because Leah is going outside the palace to play. That’s still okay and maybe you can really walk out like that. But security must be different for the royal family. On the other hand, there are no weapons on the Aldran either…

Anyway, some bounty hunters set up ambushes and catch Leah, the chase now seems a bit contrived. Because bad guys can’t catch a little kid, that just isn’t possible. After all, this is the first time we’ve seen a fall in a live action series. However, it’s always cute in the background – as if the makeup wasn’t good enough for close-ups.

Anyway, of course Leia is eventually caught, which turns out to be Riva’s plan to intimidate Obi-Wan. He is then contacted immediately and initially refuses (but will likely change his position again through the “fourth ring”). However, Bail appears in person, which makes you wonder how he could find Obi’s Cave and then get there unnoticed. But it was nice that he hadn’t built his hut yet. It is assumed that the season will end with him starting to build it…

Anyway, he then proceeds to get his lightsaber. Well, finding anything in the desert after 10 years would be impossible, so I would have preferred that he used force here rather than digging. That was a little unbelievable.

But either way, the ending promises an exciting sequel to Episode Two.
