Joel Frederiksen and the Munich Phoenix Band bring the songs of Walther von der Vogelweide to the present with exquisite naturalism and subtle precision.
If the most important poet and musician of his time was insufficiently distributed, it takes imagination, freedom, and intuition to process what escaped in the way one feels today: it can fit. This is exactly the situation with the new recording on Walter von der Vogelweide, which guitarist and vocalist Joel Frederiksen is approaching here with his band Phoenix Munich. Few of Walther’s tunes have survived, but you can also hear transfers into songs of French troubadours. Everything is a fine line, too when it comes to choosing tools. It is possible that Walther himself played a medieval quintet or – what can be assumed – a harpsichord or violin. What determines the quality of the recording are the many subtle subtleties that add up to the wonderful nature.
