Review Ensemble Aventure – Mariano Itkin: Flores Blancas

The Venture Ensemble in Freiburg brings out the nuances of the late work of Argentine composer Mariano Itken.

The music of Argentine composer Mariano Itkin, who died in 2016, rarely appears on festival schedules and concert series these days. Anyway, many of you will probably get acquainted with his world of sound for the first time through this album with late works. This music is sometimes raw and direct, sometimes veiled and withdrawn. But Cantabile stripes can also be found. The works are unobtrusively pantomime and full of suspense, but also sensual, without being pandering. Brass chamber instruments are interesting: for example in Abgesang’s “Mambo” from 1992, where trumpet, trumpet and trombone meet double bass plus woodwinds, or in “La naturaleza de las cosas” from 2001 for clarinet, trombone and cello and piano. Highly focused and interpreted in profile by the Venture Group from Freiburg, with striking expression where appropriate. The composition has the sensitivity and creativity necessary to bring out the nuances of these works.
