And with music composed by contemporary Latin American composers – Villa-Lobos, Ginastera, Barrios Manjure – guitarist Sean Shippey is making people sit up and take notice once again.
In recent years, Sean Shippey has frequently explored the side aspects of guitar repertoire, such as Mompou and Poulenc, as well as arrangements of pieces by Hildegard von Bingen. In his new album he returns to the works of Bravura, all composed by Latin American composers. But here he is also looking for an experience. So he throws himself into the extreme technical demands of Alberto Ginastera's “Sonata” with a willingness to take risks. Here Shibe is able to add his own expression to the fast rhythm, punch, intonation, grinds, fast runs, intense jumps and harmonious colours. The full guitar sound flexibly alternates with noise and sound experiences. You can feel the joy of challenges. Shippey transforms the no less demanding “12 Études” by Villa-Lobos into personal pieces of stunning detail and exquisite gradations. In Barrios he creates sonic spaces full of emotions.
