Sopranos in a doubles concert are somewhat rare. Pair groups from legendary soprano-mezzo ensembles such as Gruberova and Casarova or Caballe and Horn were more common. A recording of this concert from March 6, 2023 at the Paris Philharmonic Orchestra is essential for more than just this reason. Nadine Sierra and Pretty Yendi share a joyful, lively, humorous, and peppery journey through the repertoire of Italian-French courage. They pause briefly during the Flower duet from “Lakmé” and end with a voluptuous house sweep toward Bernstein & Co. In addition to courage and intelligence, the young stars show that the vocal approach to female characters has changed. Even moments of reflection are interspersed with self-confidence. Elegies and crêpes look different today than in the past, while Les Frivolités Parisiennes tends to be soft in places.
