Review by Nabil Shehata – Beethoven: Dedicating the House

Conductor Nabil Shehata and the South-Westphalia Philharmonic Orchestra enjoy the music of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky at the opening of their special venue.

Beethoven’s “Dedication of the House” should be taken literally here. At the end of September, the Music House of the South-Westphalia Orchestra was opened in Siegen. The State Orchestra finally had a suitable rehearsal hall after having to make do with a makeshift arrangement for so long. This is really album worthy. The recordings are from 2021, but the sight of the new home was inspiring: Beethoven indulging in fanfare, chants, drum thunder, lively brass and rich strings, without neglecting the good work. With Tchaikovsky’s Fifth, conductor Nabil Shehata shows dramatic insight: the decision to gradually increase the energy makes the climaxes and breakthroughs seem more pronounced. All of this is immersed in an intense color bath with almost spatial sound effects. Andreas Ruckoff’s “South Westphalia Fanfare,” for orchestra, exudes widescreen Hollywood glamor.
