In her new cycle Cosmic Calendar, pianist and composer Marina Baranova creates colorful soundscapes.
Pianist and composer Marina Baranova was born in Kharkiv and later studied in Hanover, where she lives today. Her mother came from classical music, her father from jazz. This can be clearly heard in their music. Baranova fuses genres in many ways. There are also elements of simple music and the traditions of Romantic improvisation and Baroque overture as well as instrumental songs. All this can be found very atmospheric in the “Cosmic Calendar” cycle. In it, the musician skillfully expands the sound of the piano with electronics. She also invited her string and brass colleagues into the studio for solo pieces. The pieces impress with a wide range of emotions, colors and a rich and enchanting sound imagination. The course reminds us to “appreciate and honor the universe we live in and to do so in peace and love,” Baranova says. The album that makes you pause. It is sorely needed in these extremely nervous and brutal times.
