Revenge of the books in our comic book review – The North Tower

Revenge of the books in our comic book review – The North Tower

He’s not coming back… Oh, he did it again. However, there were still so many unread books on the shelves, why would he buy new ones now? Didn’t he hear the angel on his shoulder? Is Satan stronger this time or louder? Do you know this image from classic cartoons? On the one hand, the angel who supports you in making the right and true decision, and on the other hand the devil who throws all reason into the sea and gives exactly the arguments that will plunge us into ruin! In the end, we sit contentedly with a whole stack of new books in our apartment. This describes one of the cartoons in this book titled: “The Revenge of the Books” (please insert a devilish laugh in your mind).

If reading hurts…

It is not easy to discuss Tom Gold’s work. How can one describe in words what the Scottish illustrator seems to be letting us readers loose in his cartoons. Tom Gauld seems to be one of the most popular and popular international humor artists. I also didn’t know him until almost 3 years ago, which may also be because his strips appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, or the New Yorker. As I do not actively read any of these papers, and as they are more intended for an English-speaking audience, Gauld’s humor struck me first after the publication of the Crazy Theories section (Review here) in the hands.

Whereas at the time the focus was on dealing with the different sciences and how society dealt with them, now Tom Gauld takes on all the people on the subject of books, literature, and the entire business around him. It is dry and biting at times, heart-rending at times and often furiously furious, because as a reader you sometimes feel stuck in the role. Because let’s be honest, who can claim that he wasn’t in the situation I describe in the first paragraph. When am I supposed to read all the books?

Literary agents, writers, supporters and opponents, almost every group of and in the field of books gets rid of “fatness”, as the saying goes. About books no one will read, about the lack of a god who once again refuses to kiss the author, or about critics who, like me, make it easy for themselves to judge a work. Sometimes laughter gets stuck in your throat, regardless of whether you belong to one target group or the other.

With Gauld, even novels can think and speak. For example, they complain that they are simply not read or evaluated correctly. What Gould had already accomplished with the Department of Crazy Theories in the field of science, he has also succeeded here in his own profession. This is already his third book with Edition Moderne, not counting other publications in English. So it is written and inspired from the point of view of the author and we cannot help but find ourselves from the point of view of the reader. This is what I call a connection between the author and the reader, which reaches to the next meta level. For even if we had no other unread book on the shelf, at least this book would still be unread if you had dutifully bought it at the nearest bookstore. And that’s what you do, right? Surely you do not want to feel the revenge of the books?
