For many, gardening is a source of relaxation and a place of peace. Harvesting and eating your own vegetables is a very special pleasure. But sad farmer Benno is deprived of this opportunity. In Snack Rabbits by Trevor Benjamin and Brett J. Gilbert, the game stars a group of hungry rabbits searching for delicious vegetables – Farmer Beano's vegetables. In Amigo Spiele's Dice Game, a competition breaks out over carrots, radishes and eggplant.
Thieves in the vegetable patch – did they jump or stop?
Snack Rabbits impresses with its concise instructions and simple rules. The game's material, lovingly drawn by Bernhard Speh, also remains manageable. Farmer Benno created five vegetable beds with fences of different heights in front of them. They have the numbers two through six printed on the dice. The corresponding number must be rolled so that the player can jump over the fence and steal the goodies on the field. In each round, the active player draws a plant and places it on the appropriate bed.
Now the most important question arises: Should we jump or stop? Is it worth trying to jump the fence or is it not worth the small reward? If you choose Safe Haven, you can increase your dice stock to have a greater chance of success on the next roll. If you dare to jump, you must cross the value of the dice on the fence card using one of your dice. If the jump is successful, all the treasures on the ground are yours. Otherwise you will have to go hungry without achieving anything. Snack Rabbits ends once Farmer Benno learns of the Snack Rabbits' shameless machinations and drives them away.
Light Rabbits: How fun is dishonest harvesting?
In my testing, players showed different opinions. The big advantage of Snack Rabbits is its simplicity. The game is explained quickly and played just as quickly. With only a few game materials, it can be unpacked and enjoyed at any time. A game for a picnic or a break on a long car ride. However, for experienced players, this may also lead to boredom, because harvesting vegetables does not hold any surprises.
Moderate for two years
I don't understand why the game is limited to four endings. With a few extra vegetables and dice, it could definitely be expanded to serve more people. Because the fun of this game for me increases the more people participate in it. The gameplay is not particularly convincing with two players – the actions are too predictable.
A snack at the end
Overall, despite the criticism, I enjoyed rolling the dice for Earth's delicious treasures. In the future it will definitely be part of the repertoire I carry for friends and family. On game night we often sit down and work our way through a large board game for hours. Tiredness sets in, the first few have to go home soon, but in reality everyone still wants to go for a short walk. Here I see the option of poaching vegetables – a little snack at the end.
