Quatuor Tchalik Review – Works by Ravel and Lyatoshinsky

Quatuor Tchalik, who comes from France, has exactly the right feelings: for the charm, freshness, liveliness, and subtle gradations of Ravel's famous string quartet. The sound structure sounds transparent, and the gestural power of the melodic lines stands out clearly. The pastel hatching, the colorful pizza spots, the dance-like energy, the lively iridescence – all of them are perfect. Ravel follows two works by the Ukrainian composer Boris Liatoshinsky from the 1920s. Before Stalinist cultural dogmas, experiments were possible: Liatoshinsky's Quartet No. 2 contains late romantic sentimentality, amazing dialogues, folkloric archaism, scale tonality and elegant fugato. Quatuor Tchalik brings all this together in an exciting development. This is also achieved by the pointed tonal changes in perspective in Liatoshinsky's Quartet No. 3, which leaves the boundaries of tonality behind. Typical interpretations!
