Stuttgart (dpa) – Porsche wants to collaborate with Mobileye on the production of highly automated driving systems. For future models, it is planned to offer, among other things, assistance systems based on the Mobileye technology platform, Porsche announced Tuesday in Stuttgart. The company, a subsidiary of the Intel chip group, has been supplying assistance systems to vehicles of various manufacturers for years and is also working on self-driving car technology.
The sports car manufacturer also wants to offer a so-called Navigate-on-Pilot function as part of the collaboration. Among other things, the car can then follow preset routes, tow in and out of the same lane and automatically overtake slower vehicles on multi-lane roads. If law and traffic permit, the driver can then also take his hands off the wheel – but must remain alert.
Mobileye’s systems should therefore also be able to be used as a primary solution by other brands in the VW Group, in which Porsche holds a majority stake. The sports car manufacturer wants the systems to be adapted by its own specialists. “In the vast majority of situations, you will want to drive a Porsche yourself in the future – and of course you can at any time,” said Michael Steiner, Head of Porsche Development. However, technology can relieve the driver of everyday tasks such as driving in traffic jams.
Due to initial difficulties and delays, Volkswagen replaced the management of the IT subsidiary Cariad only on Monday. Cariad is responsible for developing its own car software. In the past, luxury suppliers such as Porsche and Audi have criticized behind the scenes VW’s strategy of developing a standard program suitable for all of the group’s brands. Service providers, for example, fear that the launch of more models will be delayed and incur significant additional costs.
