This is the Abell 2744 galaxy cluster, about 4 billion light-years away in the direction of Sculptor. A galaxy cluster is a large celestial body containing hundreds to thousands of galaxies. The image shows countless spiral and elliptical galaxies, including galaxies that do not belong to Abell 2744.

Abell 2744 is made up of about 500 galaxies and is thought to have gone through a turbulent history, formed from the collision of at least four galaxy clusters over a period of more than 350 million years. As a result of the collision of galaxy clusters, some galaxies in Abell 2744 are believed to have been torn apart by the cluster’s gravity, and stars that do not belong to any galaxy are scattered within the cluster. Abell 2744 has also been called “Pandora’s Cluster” by researchers due to various phenomena resulting from the collision of galaxy clusters.

The first image is based on an image obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (using a total of 7 types of visible-light and infrared filters). Created and posted on January 7, 2014, and resubmitted on November 23, 2022 by the official Hubble Space Telescope Twitter account of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
