Open RAN technology

A year ago, 1&1 operated its mobile network based on Open RAN technology, and mobile services are now operational.
The deadline is December 8, according to the company, by which time 1&1’s 5G network must be “fully functional” and can also be used with smartphones. The Montapor-based telecom company has been operating its Open RAN-based mobile network for a year, so mobile services are not yet operational.
National roaming covers coverage gaps
Wherever the 5G network being set up does not yet have its own coverage, Telefónica Deutschland’s 2G/4G/5G network will automatically be available to 1&1 customers as part of the national roaming expanded by 5G.
The plan is for 1&1 to use Vodafone’s national roaming from summer 2024; Payments to Telefónica Deutschland should then be gradually reduced.
The technology behind the 1&1 network
The heart of the 1&1 network is a private cloud in decentralized edge data centers, which are connected via optical fiber with gigabit antennas. All network functions are controlled by software running on traditional servers.
1&1 Open RAN has standardized interfaces; 1&1 also works with other suppliers. From the beginning, communications provider Montapor avoided using components from Chinese manufacturers.
