Nio updates the Nomi car assistant with OpenAI technology

NEW YORK/MUNICH (IT BOLTWISE) – Nio's car assistant Nomi just got smarter with an AI update from OpenAI.

Starting in April 2024, the car manufacturer Nio will introduce a significant update to its Nomi assistance system, which is now equipped with advanced artificial intelligence technology from OpenAI. The move allows Nio to position itself as one of the first global automakers to introduce standard AI assistance in vehicles.

Many car manufacturers are integrating large AI language models into their cars to make communication between humans and machines more natural. Unlike competitors such as Mercedes, Volkswagen and others who are still planning to launch their cars, Nio has already implemented this innovation as standard.

Nomi now allows for smooth and natural conversations and intelligently responds to the user's verbal commands. The assistant is activated by commands such as “Hi Nomi” or “Hello Nomi,” and performs a variety of functions – from controlling air conditioning and lighting to navigation and communications.

Additionally, the Nomi has safety features such as speeding or inattention warnings and low battery warnings. These capabilities are the result of the integration of Microsoft's Azure technology and OpenAI's AI technology, which understands and processes complex requests.

The update is delivered via the regular 'Banyan' firmware update and is available in Europe for all Nio vehicles on the NT2.0 platform. In addition to German, the system also supports English and Norwegian, with additional languages planned.
