According to a report from South Korea, Apple is planning to introduce a new OLED display technology for the next-generation Apple Watch, Apple Watch Above all, this should be more power efficient and can significantly improve the battery life of devices. These models are expected to be released in the fall of 2024.
Innovative LTPO TFT technology
At the heart of this technological innovation is low-temperature polycrystalline oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. This technology allows for more precise control of the amount of light passing through each pixel by applying an oxide to the TFT drive and switching transistors behind each pixel. Compared to the LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) transistors currently used in Apple Watch models, LTPO technology provides lower power loss and more stable operating conditions at lower refresh rates. This improves the energy efficiency of the always-on display.
Apple Watch
While the benefits of LTPO OLED technology are clear, its implementation also presents challenges, especially in manufacturing. Manufacturing enhanced OLED displays is significantly more complex, which can impact production costs and times.
In addition to the Apple Watch, Apple could also use LTPO technology in future iPhone models. While the iPhone 15 Pro already uses LTPO panels, future non-Pro models could also take advantage of this technology, thus enjoying power savings and longer battery life.
