NAD C389: new compact amplifier with MDC2 module technology in the €1500 class
As the little brother of the newly introduced flagship new compact subwoofer of the Classic series, the C399, the C389 has pretty much the same design and equipment features as the larger models. Numerous analog and digital inputs, including an HDMI eARC link, a HybridDigital digital power amplifier, and a 32-bit/384kHz high-resolution ESS Saber D/A converter, make the C389 the versatile, resonant hub for any Hi-Fi system. NAD C389: 1,499 €
Expected to be available from authorized retailers from September 2022
As the second NAD model, the C389 is also equipped with the latest generation of Modular Design Building Technology (MDC). This concept, known as MDC2, allows the amplifier to be equipped with optional modules using rear-mounted slots that expand the device’s functionality and provide access to future technologies. The first MDC2 unit called BluOS-D, which is available for an additional cost, creates the conditions for multi-room HD BluOS music streaming, and also has AirPlay2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Dirac Live room Correction on board. In addition, the C389 can be integrated into many smart home control systems along with the MDC2 BluOS-D module.
According to the manufacturer, the C389’s HybridDigital output stages pack a continuous output power of 2 x 130 watts and achieve motive power peaks of up to 350 watts at 2. The HybridDigital design is known for its wide bandwidth and stability under low impedance amplifier loads.
The C389 has two optical and two digital coaxial inputs as well as an HDMI eARC connection to playback audio signals from a connected TV. This function is easily controlled via the TV remote control. Analog enthusiasts get their money’s worth with two high-profile inputs and a high-quality phono stage for the MM cartridges. Engineered for precise RIAA equalization, ultra-low noise and high headroom, the phono tweeter has an innovative circuit designed to suppress ray components without affecting bass reproduction. The high-level inputs are equipped with low-noise buffer amplifiers to avoid sound degradation.
Music can be streamed wirelessly from a smartphone, tablet or computer in 24-bit resolution via Bluetooth aptX HD – Bluetooth headphones can also be controlled at the same time. The C389 also has a preamp output and two subwoofer outputs as well as a headphone jack.
